The Euro

The Euro is the official currency of the European Union, now used as the sole currency for 19 EU Member States (Eurozone): Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain, for a total of 340 million inhabitants.
The Euro is also the official currency of Vatican City, Monaco and San Marino because of their existing monetary union with other eurozone member states. Have adopted the euro unilaterally the Principality of Andorra, Montenegro and Kosovo.

Introduction of the euro

The Euro was introduced officially on the 1st of January 1999 as a virtual currency, but only from the the 1st of January 2002 it entered physically in circulation with coins and bills in all the eurozone states. The European Central Bank (European Central Bank - ECB) is based in Frankfurt and manages the monetary policy of the euro together with the central banks of the eurozone countries (Eurosystem).

Coins and Banknotes

Coins coin have a common side, while the other is different for each of the 18 states, that have individually decided which image is taken, banknotes otherwise are identical in every state. Banknotes and coins of different countries can circulate freely in all eurozone countries. Coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and 1, 2 euro - Banknotes: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 euro..
