The Brazilian RealThe first currency of Brazil was the Réis (Real, according to other sources), introduced in 1694 and distributed until 1942. From 1942 to 1994 different currencies are followed, cruzeiro, cruzeiro novo, cruzado, cruzado novo, cruzeiro and cruzeiro real, until 1 July 1994, when it was introduced the current currency the Real. At the beginning the exchange rate was about 1 : 1 with the US dollar. In the period 1996-1998, the rate was supported by the Central Bank in a range of 1.00 to 1.20 reais per 1 dollar and eventually in January 1999 it was left free to float.
